2015 Gift Guide for Authors

The gift-giving season is upon us, and that means it's time to buy gifts for your favorite author. To make it easier for you, we're taking the guesswork out and providing you with some ideas.

1. Yoga Classes

Give the gift of yoga classes! Authors spend a lot of time sitting at the computer, which creates all kinds of muscle aches. Yoga classes will help them work out their kinks... and maybe keep them relaxed and focused too.

Bonus! Yoga also helps unleash creativity. If your favorite author has gotten a little stuck in her projects, this gift does double duty.

2. Their Favorite Hot Beverage

Authors love hot beverages to go with their writing. And editing. And marketing. Basically, hot drinks go with everything. Whether your favorite author loves coffee, tea, or something else, they'll appreciate receiving it.

Go for the extra thoughtful gift and get them a mug, too. Find one with an uplifting or motivational saying to keep them moving forward with their authorial endeavors.

3. Coloring Books

There's been a lot of talk around the Mill City Press marketing office about the value of coloring books (i.e., I'm a big proponent, everyone else is more skeptical, although conversions have been made), but the truth is, coloring books help you destress. Adult coloring books are hugely popular right now, and there's a reason for it.

Include a box of crayons or colored pencils with the coloring book, just in case your favorite author hasn't had the opportunity to dive into the wonderful world of coloring recently.

4. Ergonomic Back Pillow, Chair, Keyboard, or Other Office Equipment

Authors do a lot of sitting at computers. It comes with the nature of the job. And even though sitting for long stretches of time isn't healthy, that doesn't mean they can't have equipment to keep them from developing any sitting-related issues.

Back pillows, chairs, keyboards, or other office quipment are all great choices.

5. Cookbook with Fast and Easy Recipes

Authors are notorious for spending more time authoring that doing things like cooking. Make sure your favorite author stays healthy (i.e., eats regularly) by purchasing a cookbook.

With the number of cookbooks available that provide fast and easy recipes—or slow cooker recipes—you should be able to find one perfectly suited for your author.

6. Motivational Wall Art

Keep your author moving forward and positive with motivational wall art.

What do we recommend? Something with a little attitude, like this or this.

7. Book Art

One of the latest trends in book art is folded book art. The end result looks pretty fantastic.

Don't know what we're talking about? We suggest something like this or this.

8. Book-Related T-Shirts

Did you know you could wear your favorite book? Litographs offers t-shirts with the text from many classic books.

Some of our favorites? Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Wondeful Wizard of Oz.

9. Personalized Phone Case with Their Book Cover

Book covers are special to authors, since the image represents their book. Why not allow them to carry their covers around wherever they go?

Don't know where to start for this one? Once you know the type of phone your favorite author has, check out places like Vistaprint or Shutterfly.

10. Buy a Copy of Their Book and Write a Review

The ultimate thing you can do for your favorite author? Buy a copy of their book and write an honest review on Goodreads and Amazon. Reviews help other readers discover new books, and writing a review could help the author's book in finding new readers.

Even better? Buy a few copies and hand them out to people you know would love the book.
