AFFORDABLE BOOK EDITING SERVICES

You have undoubtedly logged long hours going through your manuscript with a fine-tooth comb, doing the old read, write, delete, re-write, re-read, delete, and place-head-to-desk dance. Then, after carefully reviewing the spelling and grammar and fact-checking the document, you may have even handed that manuscript over to your best friend, the English major; your cousin, the published poet; and every anal-retentive member of your writing group. We applaud your ability to brave all that criticism, but at the end of the day none of this is equal to a professional edit.

The editing process is not meant to offend you or detract from all of the perfecting you have already done. Rather, an edit is meant to increase the quality and salability of your book, regardless of subject genre. At Mill City Press, we offer a variety of editing packages designed to strengthen and polish your manuscript in preparation for its publication debut.

BASIC COPYEDIT

Basic Copyedit (One round of editing = 2¢ per word)

Our editors will:

  • Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax
  • Correct errors in sentence structure and language usage
  • Insert notifications throughout the document where approval from a third-party may be required
  • Correct errors in commonly known facts (e.g. changing “Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of Defense from New Jersey” to “Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State”)

Our editors for this package will not:

  • Restructure sentences
  • Alter word choices, except in the case of errors
  • Offer developmental suggestions
  • Edit your revisions in response to this initial edit. Any errors incorporated into the manuscript after you have approved the editor’s revisions will remain in the finished manuscript.
  • Proofread the typeset copy for any remaining errors or inconsistencies
  • Secure any necessary permissions for reprinted material including, but not limited to: song lyrics, photos, poems, newspaper articles, or text. Any such material exceeding 10 percent of the original source’s word count exceeds fair use, and it is the author’s responsibility to secure permission from the original source’s publisher.

How the Basic Copyedit process works:

  • The editor will have the manuscript copyedited within 20 business days from the date that you upload the manuscript to the MCP Author Website. The edited manuscript will be uploaded in a format in which you can see the edits/deletions, and you will have the choice to either accept or reject them. In cases where the manuscript exceeds 100,000 words, additional editing time may be required.

BASIC PLUS

Basic Plus (Two rounds of editing = a total of 3.5¢ per word + a $100 flat formatting fee for up to 2 hours' worth of changes applied to the typeset manuscript)

Our editors will:

Round I:
  • Perform a Basic Copyedit as detailed above.

Round II:
  • Proofread the typeset version of the manuscript. During this proofread, we will correct any remaining typos or errors, as well as review non-text elements including, but not limited to: photos, charts, graphs, and tables. Basic Plus is ideal for authors with heavily designed or illustrated books.

Our editors for this package will not:

  • Restructure sentences
  • Alter word choices, except in the case of errors
  • Offer developmental suggestions
  • Secure any necessary permissions for reprinted material including, but not limited to: song lyrics, photos, poems, newspaper articles, or text. Any such material exceeding 10 percent of the original source’s word count exceeds fair use, and it is the author’s responsibility to secure permission from the original source’s publisher.

How the Basic Plus process works:

  • The editor will have the manuscript copyedited within 20 business days from the date that you upload the manuscript to the Mill City Press Author Center. The edited manuscript will be uploaded in a format in which you can see the edits/deletions, and you will have the choice to either accept or reject them. In cases where the manuscript exceeds 100,000 words, additional editing time may be required.
  • Once you have approved your final interior layout, the editor will proofread the electronic typeset version and provide you with a list of suggested revisions within 10 business days.
  • If the manuscript requires significant revisions once the manuscript has been typeset, either as a result of typos incorporated by the author during the revision process or as a failure to operate track changes, additional charges may apply.

COMPREHENSIVE EDIT

Comprehensive Edit (Two rounds of editing = a total of 3.5¢ per word)

Our editors will:

Round I
  • Edit the manuscript with an eye for the grammatical errors and inconsistencies noted in the basic copy editing package, as well as offer developmental suggestions and queries to improve the clarity, arc, and soundness of your book’s argument (in the case of nonfiction); and the characterization, dialogue, and plot development (in the case of fiction)
  • Ensure that the book’s execution is consistent throughout the manuscript
  • Highlight text that is erroneous, repetitive, or extraneous
  • Conduct a 30-minute telephone consultation with you following the first edit to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding the editorial recommendations

Round II
  • Proofread the revised manuscript in a second round of editing designed to eliminate any remaining typos, errors, or inconsistencies. If new text was incorporated as part of your revision process, we will copy edit this material during the second round as well.

Our editors for this package will not:

  • Provide a complete fact-check of the manuscript
  • Edit your revisions in response to the second edit. Any errors incorporated into the manuscript after you have approved the editor’s revisions will remain in the final manuscript
  • Proofread the typeset version of the manuscript; your editor will only be working off the Word version

How the Comprehensive Edit process works:

  • The editor will have the manuscript edited within 20 business days from the Upload Date. The edited manuscript will be uploaded in a format in which you can see the edits/deletions, and you will have the choice to either accept or reject them. In cases where the manuscript exceeds 100,000 words, additional editing time may be required.
  • After you review the edited manuscript and address any queries or suggestions, you will upload the revised manuscript to the MCP Author Website and note your availability for the telephone consultation. After you have had your telephone consultation with your editor and upload the revised manuscript to our Author Website, the second round of editing will commence. Your editor will have these final revisions uploaded within 10 business days.

PUBLISH PREP EDIT

Publishing Prep Edit (Three rounds of editing = a total of 4.5¢ per word + $100 flat formatting fee for up to 2 hours' worth of changes applied to the typeset manuscript)

Our editors will:

Round I:
  • Edit the manuscript with an eye for the grammatical errors and inconsistencies noted in the Basic Copyedit package, as well as offer developmental suggestions and queries to improve the clarity, arc, and soundness of your book’s argument (in the case of nonfiction); and the characterization, dialogue, and plot development (in the case of fiction)

Round II:
  • Perform a second developmental edit once you have revised the manuscript based on the editorial recommendations offered in the first edit. During this second round, your editor will address any remaining structural flaws or inconsistencies. If new text was incorporated as part of your revision process, we will copyedit this material during the second round as well.

Round III:
  • Proofread the typeset version of the manuscript. During this proofread, we will correct any remaining typos or errors, as well as review non-text elements including, but not limited to: photos, charts, graphs, and tables.

Our editors for this package will not:

  • Secure any necessary permissions for reprinted material including, but not limited to: song lyrics, photos, poems, newspaper articles, or text.
